In honor of the upcoming book award season, our second and third graders are reading some possible nominees for this year's Caldecott award and voting to see which book will win the Beardacott award from our Bandabears.
This week we read One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo which is the story of well-mannered Elliot who reluctantly visits the aquarium with his distractible father. When Elliot gets permission to get a penguin he removes one from the penguin pool to his backpack. The fun of caring for a penguin in a New England Victorian house is followed by a surprise revelation by Elliot's father.
Up against it was Nighttime Ninja by Barbara DaCosta where late at night, when all is quiet and everyone is asleep, a ninja creeps silently through the house in search of treasure. Soon he reaches his ultimate goal...and gets a big surprise!
