Round Two

Round two in the first annual Beardacott Awards and another clear winner!  The two books I read this week were full of sweet adventure.  We went over the criteria for the Caldecott award and I was surprised to see how fast one book took and kept the lead!

Red Knit Cap Girl lives with her animal friends in an enchanted forest. There is so much to see and do, but more than anything Red Knit Cap Girl wishes she could talk to the Moon. This story takes us  on a journey of curiosity, imagination, and joy as they search for a way to meet the Moon.
This looks like an ordinary box full of ordinary yarn.
But it turns out it isn’t.Watch the pages change as Annabelle knits sweaters for everyone and everything in her surroundings.  A book of magical fun.

Extra Yarn won this round, can't wait to see what wins next time.  Each of these books would make a great gift for kids of all ages.  Happy Holidays!

First Annual Beardacott Awards

One Cool FriendNighttime Ninja
In honor of the upcoming book award season, our second and third graders are reading some possible nominees for this year's Caldecott award and voting to see which book will win the Beardacott award from our Bandabears.

This week we read One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo which is the story of well-mannered Elliot who reluctantly visits the aquarium with his distractible father.  When Elliot gets permission to get a penguin he removes one from the penguin pool to his backpack. The fun of caring for a penguin in a New England Victorian house is followed by a surprise revelation by Elliot's father.

Up against it was  Nighttime Ninja by Barbara DaCosta where late at night, when all is quiet and everyone is asleep, a ninja creeps silently through the house in search of treasure. Soon he reaches his ultimate goal...and gets a big surprise!

The clear winner this round was One Cool Friend the story of Elliot and his pet penguin, Magellan.  I can't wait to see what will win next week!

Product DetailsProduct DetailsProduct DetailsBook Clubs!

We are holding book clubs during afternoon recess in the library for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders looking for a good place to talk about books.  This month the 3rd graders are reading Sarah, Plain and Tall and meeting on Friday afternoons.  The 4th graders are reading Tuck Everlasting and discussing it on Thursday afternoons and the 5th graders are reading When You Reach Me, our meeting day is Wednesdays during  last recess.

There are a few kids who are interested but can't make it during recess, feel free to read the book on your own (I have copies for you in the library to check out) and discuss it with me or your classmates when you can.

We're off to a great start for December!

Biographies

Front Cover
We have a whole collection of these biographies in the library. This collection is popular because of the funny cover illustrations and the quick quiz on the back.  They are great for finding out interesting information about all different people: presidents, entertainers and inventors.  There are hundreds of other biographies and autobiographies in our collection for all different levels of readers.

Lots of kids who stumble upon the biographies end up wanting more because really, what's more interesting than real life?  With election day behind us it's an interesting time to consider who your favorite president is, do you have one?

Mo Willems

Did you hear we got new books?  Two of our new books are from one of our favorite authors, Mo Willems.   Knuffle Bunny Free (with a hard K, not a silent K) is the latest story of Trixie and her favorite stuffed lovie, Knuffle Bunny.  If you have had experience with your own or a child's favorite blankie or lovie you will relate with the adventure of this sweet, fun story.

Don't Let the Pigeon Stay up Late is the latest visit from that pesky pigeon who always wants to see how far he can push the rules.  This book is a really fun read aloud because the kids LOVE to tell the pigeon "NO!" (all except the one kid in every class who lets the pigeon do whatever he wants).  Check out these fun new books in the library and tell us, what's your favorite Mo Willems book?
